Learn to Boost Your Maize Yields with these Simple Maize Fertilization Steps

Are you a maize farmer in Nigeria and you are concerned about low yields? Poor soil nutrients and improper fertilization may be holding you back. This simple guide will show you exactly how to fertilize your maize to grow more corn. With easy steps for soil prep, fertilizer use, and weed control, you’ll learn how to boost your harvests. This will make your farm more profitable. Read on!

1. Know Your Soil
Ideally, you should start with a soil test to uncover nutrient gaps and apply fertilizer based on the test results. Whether you’re in Northern Nigeria’s sandy soils or the Southern savannas, a soil test helps you pick the perfect fertilizer blend. Send samples to a local lab and get tailored recommendations.
In the absence of a soil testing facility, you can follow these steps to fertilize your maize and boost your yield. This guide is particularly useful for fields that have been previously farmed and may have low nutrient levels.
2. Prep Your Land

Before planting, mix in crop residues during ridging to enrich the soil naturally. Building ridges or heaps will help to protect the maize roots and prevent lodging.

3. Kick Off with NPK Fertilizer

In total, you need to fertilize your maize with an NPK 25:10:10 fertilizer at 600 kg/ha, or 12 bags. Apply half at planting in sowing holes or broadcast, then save the other half (about 5.4 g/plant for 55,555 plants/ha) for a side-dressing 5-6 weeks later. Place it 10-15 cm from the plant base, 5-10 cm deep, and cover with soil to lock in nutrients.

4. Control Weeds

Weeds will steal soil nutrients from your maize if not controlled! So you will need to control weeds. You should weed twice, at 2 weeks and 4-5 weeks after planting. You can do manual weeding if possible. Otherwise, approved herbicides can save time.

5. Adapt to Your Region

Northern Nigeria might need more nitrogen, while Southern soils may crave phosphorus. Adjust rates based on your yield goals and local conditions. Not sure? Local extension services have your back. You may also consult us to guide you.

Why It Works

This combo of pre-plant NPK, nitrogen topdressing, and weed control ensures your maize gets the nutrients it needs at every growth stage. Plus, smart soil prep keeps your farm thriving for years.
